One of the best things about Charleston is its amazing location. Downtown Charleston is located on a harbor where tons of trade and cruise ships pass through pretty frequently. If you head a few miles north or south, though, you end up at some of the prettiest beachfront in the South. Stay with great downtown Charleston hotels and take a day to enjoy a sunny fun-filled beach day!

When staying in downtown Charleston there are three options for heading to the beach, each with their own pros and cons.

  • Isle of Palms– located around fifteen miles north of downtown Charleston; the Isle of Palms is a six-mile long barrier island with gorgeous beaches. The island has several restaurants and bars to check out. If you are looking for live music and a great scene, check out the Windjammer in the summer. The beach is free to use but parking ranges from $7-10
  • Folly Beach– Heading south, Folly beach is located just over ten miles from downtown Charleston. Folly Beach is less commercialized than the Isle of Palms but still features a good number of restaurants and bars to check out when you get hungry from running around on the beach. Many fishing contest are held at Folly Beach but the north part of the island is great for swimming.
  • Sullivan’s Island– Located right next to Mt. Pleasant, this is one of the least commercialized beaches in the Charleston area. It’s just a short ten mile drive from downtown to the beautiful and quiet beaches of Sullivan’s Island. Locals often go swimming here because there is less tourist traffic but parking is limited.

Regardless of where you go, make sure to enjoy the beach during a vacation to downtown Charleston. Summer isn’t perfect with a walk in the sand and Charleston South Carolina attractions!
